Ethnic Minority Traveller and Refugee Achievement Service

Welcome to the Newcastle upon Tyne Ethnic Minority Traveller and Refugee Achievement Service Website.
The Ethnic Minority Traveller and Refugee Achievement Service (EMTRAS) is committed to promoting equality of opportunity in education to learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL), to British Minority Ethnic (BME) children, to Refugee / Asylum Seekers and to Traveller pupils.

The role of EMTRAS is to work with schools, teachers and other agencies to raise the attainment of EAL pupils and advise schools on how to create an inclusive ethos which impacts on BME / EAL attainment. We contribute to raising standards by building capacity in schools through CPD, advisory visits etc.

We also have a buy-back service through which schools can have the service of a teacher or bilingual assistant who can work directly with pupils under a Service Level Agreement.

On our website you will find information and advice on supporting schools and settings in promoting the achievement of BME / EAL learners.

We aim to help schools to:

  • set suitable learning challenges

  • respond to pupil's diverse learning needs

  • overcome potential barriers to learning and assessment

All schools in Newcastle upon Tyne are able to access EMTRAS to receive information and advice about EAL issues.

In addition we have an resources room in the Additional Needs Team, at Trinity Oakfield College, which all schools in Newcastle can borrow resources.
